Top French ski resorts to celebrate New Year’s Eve
Whilst Paris regularly ranks as high on the list to spend New Year, a French ski resort is also a great place to celebrate “Le Reveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre”
The resorts all bring in the New Year with a combination of fireworks, torchlit descents and parties at the local bars and clubs or sumptuous French feasts in a restaurant, for which you will need to book as early as you can to ensure you get a table. It is best to select a snow sure resort if you want to do some skiing as well. Here are few suggestions:
Tignes is known for its New Year celebrations with an outdoor celebration reputed to be the biggest free outdoor party in Europe at Tignes le Lac. So why not grab your moonboots and rock on down to the Pop-Rock Party on the highest dance floor in Europe. Watch the fireworks from the dance floor!
If you are after something a little more refined, make sure you book into your restaurant of choice for a traditional and sumptuous French feast with French champagne, of course!
With skiing up to 3,656m the area is snow sure, even if the snow gods have not been overly generous on the lower elevations, leading up to the Christmas period. You can be whisked up to the glacier by the Grande Motte Funicular, a high-speed inclined cable railway from Val Claret in 6-8 minutes. From here you can access some 300kms of runs in the ski area linked with Val d’Isere.
Meanwhile over in Val d’Isere, book into one of the many venues for a New Year’s Eve party be it a themed event or a big-name DJ or for something quieter once again book into your favourite restaurant for a special NYE menu. Be sure to book well in advance! At midnight join the crowd in the town centre for the final countdown and fireworks. Don’t forget that aside from skiing you could try one of the many other activities such as the Centre Aquasportif, ice driving circuit, ice skating, helicopter flights or indulge yourself in a luxurious spa treatment.
The fashionable resort of Les Deux Alpes has a vibrant après scene with New Year’s Eve celebration starting with a torchlit parade, fireworks and vin chaud. With the largest skiable glacier in Europe, the top elevation of 3,568m is one of the highest skiable summits. There are expansive blue runs on the glacier allowing beginners to also enjoy the spectacular views. Freestyle Land is an outstanding snowpark and is considered one of the foremost winter snowparks in Europe. Another feature is the access to La Grave for experienced skiers. La Grave has only one groomed run and the rest they describe as “a real mountain environment” raw and unforgiving.
