The best and cheapest time to go skiing in the French Alps, it’s not what you think.

Val Thorens ski resort

The best and cheapest time to go skiing in the French Alps, it’s not what you think.

Fortunately for Australians travelling to France to ski in the summer holiday period, we are able to take advantage of the cheaper rates on offer in the ski resorts from January 4th to Feb 1st 2020.

And that is not all! Europeans and the Brits flock to the resorts through February into March which is their holiday period so through January the slopes, ski schools and restaurants will not be as busy especially during the week. However, you can expect to share the slopes with the locals on the weekends if there has been a good recent snowfall.

Typically, in January, the snow is dry with the largest accumulation. This also means that it is the coldest time, so you will need to make sure that you dress warmly. It is still wise to choose a high-altitude resort in case mother nature has not been kind earlier in the season bearing in mind that snowmaking is used to supplement natural snowfall in high traffic areas.

Not only it is the cheapest time of the winter season to go skiing in January in the French Alps but it is also the best time to go thanks to the weather conditions, the lack of queues which also means more availability and choice of accommodation for you.

Why not swap the sun and the surf for skiing in France this year?
