One of the most beautiful and peaceful villages in the alps which also happens to be a car-free and a ski-in ski-out resort.
Perched on the edge of a cliff, getting to Murren is quite an experience but it’s definitely worth the effort. Murren is the Bernese Oberland’s highest ski area and although quite limited in extent, offers incredible views of the cliff faces and peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau which dominates the landscape on the far side of the Lauterbrunnen valley.
December 14, 2019 – April 19, 2020
The winter sports region of Mürren-Schilthorn has 53 km of prepared ski and snowboard pistes, toboggan runs and a network of winter walking trails. Beyond the Lauterbrunnen valley, a further 30 or so cableways and lifts, and 160 km of pistes in the other ski areas of the Jungfrau region can also be used. There is an 11 km cross-country ski trail in the valley between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen.
Mürren is pretty small and features mainly 3 star hotels with one 4 star hote. Nearly all hotels are within 10 minutes on foot from either the train station or the cableway station
Après ski in Murren mostly revolves around the hotels and a few bars in the village, and is almost invariably quiet and relaxing except during the Inferno Race weekend. Likewise most of the eating is in hotel restaurants offering enjoyable Swiss cooking and local Valais wines.
Murren offers a choice of 10 mountain restaurants, of which the best known by far is the world famous 007 Piz Gloria at 2,970m, which starred in the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
The Inferno Race – the largest amateur ski race in the world with 1800 participants. The fastest entrants will complete the 14.9 km from the Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen in only 15 minutes (January).
Lauberhorn ski races – the men’s downhill route ranks among the great classics of Alpine ski sports with a gradient of up to 90% (January).
