Nestled in the heart of the historic Dromonts neighbourhood in Avoriaz, the Hotel des Dromonts was the first project of the ski area, and the first major work of architect Jacques Labro, construction began in 1964 and the hotel opened at Christmas in 1966.
The style is organic, with a layout that splays out like a fan, affording panoramic views across the breathtaking landscape, and an innovative “tavaillon roof” style siding covered in cedar shingles, these wooden shingles are typical of Savoyard roofs, giving the Hotel des Dromonts its signature pinecone shape.
The Dromonts’ square became the historical heart of the resort and it is undoubtedly its unique atmosphere, which inspired the creation of the Avoriaz Fantasy Film Festival. The first edition was held in 1973, the Hotel des Dromonts became the place for stories just as legendary as the films…
The legendary Hotel Des Dromonts remains 50 years after its creation a contemporary architectural marvel, as breathtaking as the snowy peaks that surround it. The audacious elements of varied levels and revolutionary lines are revisited in a cosy and warm spirit, enhancing the sixties design style. everything was done to keep the original spirit of the place with a focus on natural, local materials…
Exterior shingles, a signature-style specific to the resort, bright pops of colour, slate stones, the Hotel des Dromonts combines modern comfort while highlighting the warm, rounded and peppy style of the sixties.
The hotel lounge with its wooden walkway and large, open, brick fireplace invites guests to bask in its warmth on built-in benches, sharing a hot chocolate or mulled wine after a day on the slopes. As for the 28 rooms and 6 suites, they have been designed as “ski chamber*” chic and comfortable like a soft nest, optimised and adapted to the needs of the skier, in a 60s Mod style revisited in cosy fabrics and plush carpets for an intimate and functional atmosphere. The slate, prevail in the bathrooms, a final touch essential to recreating the atmosphere of the surrounding mountains.
Following on the success of Les enfants Terribles – Megève and Val Thorens, the bistro chic concept takes up residence at the Hôtel des Dromonts, telling the story of an avant-garde era for cosy and intimate dinners, where house classics are spotlighted, such as the traditional “steak au poivre”.
And for those in a more festive mood, or for a lunch close to the slopes, le Festival, just a few steps below, offers a lively and unconventional moment around the famous bar, sharing small plates or inimitable fondues selected by Boujon, the master cheesemonger. Le Festival welcomes as well the starving skiers for a lunch on the ski-in / ski-out terrace.
The style of the Pure Altitude Spa at the Hôtel des Dromonts is a tribute to the classic design of Avoriaz. 3 treatment rooms wrapped in cedar shingles, in the spirit of the “tavaillon” buildings.
In contrast, the floors are dressed in slate, the stone emblematic of the ski area, and to bring in a touch of light, as if straight out of a James Bond film, the ceilings are adorned with large mirrors…
The relaxing space is more subdued, surrounded by gently rounded semi-precious stones and coloured agates, highlighting the bright shades so dear to the Sixties. And for fans of relaxation in the open air, follow the «kaleidoscopic» hall of mirrors to join the Jacuzzi and sauna waiting outside on the terrace, with the pristine slopes in the background…
