Meribel is a ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps, situated near the town of Moutiers.
Méribel refers to three neighbouring villages in the Les Allues commune of the Savoie Departement of France, near the town of Moutiers, called Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Village.
Where to stay in Meribel
Meribel les Allues is more commonly referred to as Meribel. One of the most tastefully designed of French purpose built resorts, all the buildings are wood-clad and chalet style, offering a picturesque setting for all ski holiday makers.
Meribel Les Allues is the original village with its ancient church and village oven. Here there are 3 restaurants, 1 English bar, supermarket, ski/board shop, and newsagents. This is the nearest you will get in Meribel to a small traditional style village. It has its own direct gondola link to the main town of Meribel-Mottaret, which takes approximately 15 minutes.
Meribel Mottaret, usually just called Mottaret is a satellite resort higher up the mountain from Meribel Les Allues. Purpose built for slope-side convenience, ski holidays in Meribel-Mottaret are a good choice for ski in ski out and great for early or late season skiing due to its great location to the rest of the Three Valleys and the ski areas snow sure reputation.
Mottaret is much quieter than Meribel Les Allues with fewer bars and restaurants, however, there are local free buses that run regularly between the villages. There is also a pedestrian gondola that links the two villages of Meribel and Mottaret, so one can enjoy the apres ski in Les Allues before getting back to the ski chalet for dinner on your ski holidays in Meribel-Mottaret. The gondola stops running at 7.30pm.
Approximately 2 miles out of town is Meribel Village. Developed only a few years ago, this village is very small and up market with luxury apartments and Méribel ski chalets, served by its own chairlift to Meribel Altiport.
Méribel le Raffort is another village also just out of town, with one restaurant and a gondola connection to the main ski resort. Raffort is mainly privately run chalets that usually have their own minibus service.
The resort itself, provides its guest with instant access to 144km of runs (71% of them being of intermediate difficulty level), which are located in the Meribel Valley. Meribel is the most centrally located of all villages what makes it the place to stay if you want to check the entire ski area of the 3 Valleys.
Large number of cable cars and ski lifts allows skiers quickly get anywhere they wish. Nightlife is plentiful and it also has a more relaxed, down to earth atmosphere than its neighbouring resorts.
